Review – Kostüme Cycle Wear Jersey and Bib Shorts

Kostüme's approach is different. Rather than warehouses full of stock, end of season sales and out of stock sizes, Kostüme operates a pre-order setup: they release an edit of a cool new design, and you place a pre-order within their ten day window. Once all orders are in, Kostüme make the kit, and you get your bespoke apparel delivered.

I am a great supporter of the pre-order manufacturing approach. Yes, you might have to wait 6-8 weeks to get your new cycling jersey, bibs and gilet, but that just requires a bit of prior planning. Pre-ordering reduces waste, enables more frequent changes in design, and is ultimately better for everyone's wallets.

Kostüme aren't just different in their manufacturing approach though, their kit also has some of the most daring and interesting graphical design work of cycling jerseys I have worn to date. Thanks to their collaborations and partnerships with world-famous artists, they can bring to life jerseys that will turn everyone's head.

I was recently sent a Kostüme long sleeve jersey, bib shorts and gilet to test, and from start to finish I have been impressed by the design and development of this brand.

The Perfect Fit

Kostüme have one of the most detailed size guides I have seen, and this ensures that riders get the sizing they want, straight out of the packet. The long sleeve jersey is close fitting, but with excellent sleeve and body length, and a great tailored fit. The bib shorts are true to size, and thanks to the wide shoulder straps and raw cut hems there is nothing to catch or chafe.

Feature Packed Kostüme Bib Shorts

The Kostüme bib shorts are made from soft OEKO-TEX® certified ECONYL® fabric with UPF 50+ protection, combining comfort with performance. They feature a bespoke four-layer chamois with a bonded aloe treatment, meaning there is no need for chamois cream. Raw-cut leg hems and a custom hypoallergenic gripper help create a smooth, secure fit, while cooling perforated straps ensure lasting comfort on long rides.

Versatile 3-Season Long Sleeve Cycling Jersey

The Kostüme jersey is one of the best designs I have seen in recent years. It uses OEKO-TEX® certified recycled fabrics, with a UPF 50 rating that provides 98% protection from harmful UV rays. A secondary OEKO-TEX® certified recycled breathable mesh fabric helps with heat management.

The long sleeve jersey has a well-tailored slim fit cut, with men and women-specific fits. For long endurance riding, the unique five-pocket rear cargo configuration with reinforced stitching gives you all-day carrying capacity, while there is a discreet zipped side seam pocket for keys and cards.

It is great to see a proper zipper on this jersey: a robust snag-free YKK® zip with a durable reflective puller makes for easy one-handed use on the move. Elsewhere, gripper-free sleeves minimise irritation.

This jersey is feature packed, fits perfectly, and looks fantastic. It is my go-to jersey for long endurance rides at present.

Summary

To sum up, Kostüme are rocking the boat in the world of cycling apparel; doing things a little bit differently. Their pre-order setup is smooth and efficient, and the clothing that they deliver is exceptional in its fit, comfort and style. It is no wonder that Kostüme has become a top choice amongst endurance cyclists; this is kit that you want to wear all day long.

Review – Muc-Off Big Bore Tubeless Valves

Tubeless tyres are now widely accepted to be the best choice for gravel bikes, mountain bikes and even road bikes; but whilst tubeless technology has come a long way in the last decade, tubeless valves remain one area that has been ripe for improvement. Tubeless bicycle tyre set-ups usually use a Presta style valve, with a removable valve core to allow you to inject tubeless sealant into the tyre without removing the tyre from the rim. Yet, Presta valves have two disadvantages: First, their relatively small valve opening reduces the airflow that can be pumped into the tyre in one go, this is problematic when you want a large whoosh of air to 'pop' the tyre bead onto the rim when seating tubeless tyres. The second disadvantage is that tubeless sealant tends to clog up the delicate valve core, leading to problems inflating and deflating the tyre.
