Review - Gore C5 Gore-Tex SHAKEDRY 1985 Waterproof Jacket

We all know Gore-Tex, but the new Gore Shakedry fabric is an incredible innovation. The unique super-thin fabric has 'constant beading technology', which means even after being bombarded with spray for hours on end, it stays waterproof. This is a game changing waterproof cycling jacket.

The Gore-Tex Shakedry technology is used in a number of the jackets within the Gore cycling range. The C5 Gore-Tex Shakedry 1985 Jacket is a super packable, highly breathable, 100 percent waterproof cycling jacket.

The Shakedry material, first used in the Gore ONE range in 2017, has an incredibly thin single-layer profile. The thin profile, and the fabric lay-up help to make the jacket super breathable - easily the most breathable jacket I have tested to date. The Shakedry coating also makes the garment incredibly protective though; both from wind and rain, despite its featherweight feel and tiny pack size.

The unique mix of attributes found in this jacket could mean this the only truly 'packable' cycling jacket that is 100 percent waterproof.

For such a lightweight jacket, the Gore 1985 ShakeDry Jacket also features a surprising number of 'added extras'. On the neckline you get a closure tab, to help seal out the elements. On the cuffs there is stretchy elastic to seal around gloves. Then there are also high-visibility logos, a 2-way zipper, and a rear pocket that doubles up as a stuff sack.

The fit of Gore C5 products is slightly more relaxed than a 'Race-Cut' fit, so I fit into a Small in the 1985 jacket. This provides a good fit on the body and arms (see my measurements here). For a more race fit profile, take a look at the Gore C7 Gore-Tex Shakedry Waterproof Jacket.

To sum up, Gore Wear Shakedry fabrics set a new standard for waterproof cycling jackets. This jacket provides the protection of a multi-layer hard-shell jacket, but with the packability of a race-cape. It is light, durable, and has a great fit and feel in a wide range of conditions. This was my jacket of choice for endurance events such as the #5MaratonasChallenge, and the TorTour Cyclocross. Highly impressive.
