Review - Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro Evolution Winter MTB Tyre

Review - Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro Spiked MTB Tyres

There are few things that stop me from riding my bike. Icy roads though, instil fear into my mind. Cycling with spiked tyres on a bicycle is something that I have never explored before; but on realising they could provide the solution to the risk and fear associated with ice covered roads and trails, I was interested to test them out. I have been riding the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro MTB tyres in some challenging conditions, to see if they deliver…

I decided that the roads of the Isle of Wight did not provide enough of a testing ground to explore the capabilities of the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro. So, to find out what they were able to offer, I headed to the frozen land of Norway, in January.

Three days of 'Ice Biking' started from the city of Oslo. It wasn't long after rolling (noisily) off the ferry from Denmark that we found our first ice rink bike paths. Normally, the sheet ice spread across these paths would have me wincing in fear; but, miraculously, I had traction…

If I tried to walk on the path, it was like I was Bambi on ice. But, clipped in and pedalling, the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tyres gave as much grip as if I was riding a rubber 29er MTB tyre on hard-pack mud. Incredible.

Things only improved further when I headed off the tarmac and into the frozen freshly snow-ploughed forest roads. Sweeping around corners, I felt confident and planted. Even under heavy braking I could pull on the anchors reassured that the wheels would not lock up and skid on the hard-packed ice and snow.

I have never ridden anything like them. The Schwalbe Ice Spiker opens up a whole new world of winter trails and exploration.

Yes, they are noisy as hell on the road, and rather slow too. They are also pretty pricey. Yet, the Ice Spiker allows you to ride ice and snow covered trails that otherwise would be left untouched until the springtime melt.

The three days in Norway were something of an epiphany: these tyres offer up a whole new world of winter riding opportunities. Move over skiers… the Ice Spiker is here.

  1. Nice one Tim . You covered the perils of wintertime riding quite well . As long as the snow accumulation isn't high . But what about riding in the rain ? I have some rain gear but could use a little more , like leggings and a waterproof headlight .
    What do you suggest ?
