Review – Ortlieb Accessory Pack Waterproof Handlebar Bag

Review Ortlieb Accessory Pack Waterproof Handlebar Bag
Over the years I have tested countless handlebar bags, both for multi-day bikepacking expeditions and for everyday adventures; in that time, I have created a mental five-point checklist of all the things a compact handlebar bag must deliver on and feature:

  1. 100% waterproof – it needs to keep its contents safe and dry; otherwise, tools will go rusty, and you will need to take it off the bike every time you wash it or ride in the rain.
  2. Secure Velcro mounting – straps are better than buckles in my experience, causing less damage to handlebars and allowing for maximum versatility.
  3. Below computer mounting – it needs to hang below the horizontal level of the handlebar, so it does not conflict with the computer mount, but not so low that it hits the front wheel.
  4. Durability – it needs to stand the test of time and constant use. This means the materials need to cope with prolonged periods of dampness and the buckles or zips need to last.
  5. Compact size – large enough to fit all essentials tools and tubes inside, as well as an emergency jacket and snacks; but not so large it interferes with your hand positions.

The Ortlieb Accessory Pack is one of the few small/medium size handlebar bags that ticks the box for all the above criteria, and it does so in a timeless style and with exceptional versatility.

The Ortlieb Accessory Pack is primarily pitched as an 'add-on' pouch for the Ortlieb Handlebar-Pack – using the web lashing system on the rear of the Accessory Pack you can securely attach it to the multi-day expedition level Ortlieb Handlebar-Pack. The Accessory Pack also works as a standalone small handlebar bag though, utilising the Velcro handlebar straps; this is the set-up that I have primarily used it in to date.

At 204 grams weight, and able to carry one kilogram of load in its 3.5 litre volume, the Ortlieb Accessory Pack is the perfect size to fit inside 44 centimetre width (or larger) handlebars, and carry all your ride essentials. Off the bike, it can also be worn as a hip pack or shoulder sling bag, utilising the supplied webbing strap through the webbing on the back of the bag.

The robust waterproof fabric and the adjustable roll-top closure shakes off the worst winter weather and are easily cleaned with a sponge during bike washing, so you rarely need to remove the bag from your bike.

Ortlieb were one of the 'original' waterproof roll-top pannier designers, and the Accessory Pack demonstrates how they have utilised that timeless design and flawless functionality in a compact handlebar for gravel and adventure riding. A great handlebar bag for all adventures!
