Review – Rapha Men's Core Rain Jacket II Waterproof Cycling Jacket

Rapha Mens Core Rain Jacket II Waterproof Cycling Jacket Review

The Rapha Men's Core Rain Jacket II is an affordable and lightweight waterproof cycling jacket, designed to set the standard for everyday weather protection.

Riding in wet and inclement weather does not have to be miserable; with the right kit, you can still enjoy your weekend ride even if the weather doesn't play ball.

The original Rapha Core Rain Jacket was a staple outer layer for many cyclists—offering lightweight but fully waterproof protection. The new Version 2 is an evolved and adapted take on the award-winning original.

Made from a lightweight (129 grams for size small) fully-waterproof fabric with taped seams, and featuring a YKK AquaGuard® zipper; this outer shell will hold off downpours that develop during your ride, but without causing you to overheat in mild but wet conditions.

Packability is at the heart of the Core Rain Jacket, and the layer is designed to be stowable in a jersey pocket—so that it can be easily whipped out and donned to protect yourself from the elements. This packability also makes it a suitable choice for bikepacking and bicycle touring—when pack space is always at a premium.

The new Version 2 of the Rapha Core Rain Jacket features some neat developments. On the cuffs there is an inner elasticated cuff to create a more water-tight seal at the wrists. The elasticated hem has also been redesigned to offer an improved fit, while the signature off-set zipper avoids irritation under your chin.

At £100 retail, the Rapha Core Rain Jacket is not cheap, but also far from being the most expensive waterproof cycling jacket on the market. That affordability is because Rapha want this piece to be accessible to all riders, and to literally be the Core of a rider's wardrobe.

The fit is in line with this universal wearability—it is Rapha's 'Classic' cut designed with a more relaxed fit and longer length to offer an 'all-day comfort' option for a variety of rider sizes. I opted for a Medium size in this jacket, but in truth I probably could have downsized to a Small (I am 181cm and 72kg).

I have enjoyed wearing the Rapha Core Rain Jacket II on several spring and summer rides when the weather has unexpectedly turned. It is comfortable, protective, classically styled, and impressively breathable for a mid-range waterproof jacket. A great outer layer.

Robust, lightweight, protective, and with a great style. The Rapha Core Rain Jacket is a go-to waterproof for any road or gravel cyclist.
