Review - Vaude All Year Moab MTB Clothing Collection
In all honesty, I have barely taken this kit off since it arrived with me for testing. Vaude have done it again with the Vaude All Year Moab Mountain Biking Collection — they have produced a superb set of cycling kit, inspired by their heritage and knowledge in the outdoor sports market.
This is innovative apparel, which performs both on the bike, and as practical everyday wear.
The jacket is designed as a 'hybrid' piece of apparel — with strategically placed Primaloft® Eco Insulation on the front and shoulders providing warmth, and waterproof stretch inserts on back, hood and lower cuffs helping to shield you from the elements.
The exceptional side of the All Year Moab Jacket comes from the details — features like the elasticated cuffs that seal out the wind; or the pit zips that allow you to vent out and prevent over-heating. There are pockets too — something that I often miss in out-and-out cycling jackets; the chest pocket and hand warmer pockets are great for when the jacket is in use as casual wear.
With its relaxed fit and bold colour block design, this jacket is a great looking and superbly made piece of kit. It attains the faultless level of quality that I have come to expect from Vaude products and delivers on its promised capabilities as both a great relaxed riding jacket, and a smart piece of everyday outdoor sports wear.
The All Year Moab Shirt provides a similar hybrid construction to the Moab Jacket — in that it has windproof inserts on the front and shoulders, but highly breathable stretch fabrics elsewhere in the design. The long sleeves provide warmth down the full length of your arms, whilst the full-length zipper provides effective ventilation when it is required.
With the target market for the piece being a mountain biker, the jersey has just one zippered pocket on the rear — in expectation that it will be most often worn with a hydration pack for storage. This single pocket is still useful for valuables, and it means that the jersey doesn't look too out of place in more casual settings — something that I am slightly aware of when wearing fully rear pocketed jerseys off the bike.
Everything from the patterned fabrics to the eco-friendly credentials of this Vaude shirt provide even more reasons for it to become a favourite piece of kit, and I have found myself wearing it with a long sleeve base layer as a great piece of every-day casual wear as well as for winter mountain bike sessions.
To complete the Moab All Year MTB range there are the innovative Vaude Moab Zip-Off Pants. Featuring a design that allows you to wear them as shorts or trousers, and insulation that protects your legs on the coldest days — these are a great piece of practical outdoor sports wear for both on and off the bike.
The base of the pants is the Primaloft® Eco Insulation fronted shorts. The wide adjustable stretch waistband and reinforced seat mean they are comfortable to wear on the bike, and notably warmer than most shorts. The two-way zippers on the side of the shorts mean they can be worn with knee pads (zipping up the lower section slightly to give a wider opening) or used as a ventilation aid.
The thing that makes these 'All Year' though, is the zip-off legs. The lower legs are almost like leg warmers, in that they are close fitting and stretchy. They provide a great addition of insulation in colder conditions. The zip-off capability comprises of a zipper down the side of the leg as well as just above the knee; which means that you can take them off without needing to take your shoes off. Neat.
For everything from winter walks to muddy mountain bike sessions, these Moab trousers have been super comfortable, and great performance wear. Well recommended to complete the Vaude Moab All Year collection.
