Review – Souke Sports Cycle Apparel Jersey and Shorts
I am always on the lookout for new and interesting cycle clothing brands. This year, Souke Sports came to my attention with the release of their new Pro Line. The Chinese-British brand started from an Amazon-based value-offering; but this latest range, and the establishment of their new direct-to-consumer website souke-sports.com, cater towards the higher end of the market.
I have been testing the Souke BS1601 4D Padded Bib Shorts and Souke Hi Race Lightweight Pro Jersey for the last few months and have had a positive experience. Both garments are still relatively inexpensive, but both deliver an impressive performance level for their affordable price tag.
The Souke BS1601 Bib Shorts feature a decent quality foam seat pad, perforated mesh bib straps, and ventilated panels on the thighs. They do not have the level of compression-fit or the long-distance seat pad comfort provided by the most expensive cycling shorts on the market, but they do offer a satisfactory level of padding and comfort for 3 to 4-hour summer rides.
The Souke Hi Race Pro Jersey is a lightweight summer cycling jersey, similar to 'Climber's' jerseys from other brands. The lightweight material, silicone hem grippers, and full-length front zip make it an excellent choice for hot weather conditions, while the three good-sized rear pockets are useful for those long-ride essentials. It is also available in a range of bold and vibrant colours—I particularly like the orange.
The fabrics and styling of the Souke Sports Pro Line of clothing are up there with some of the best brands on the market, but at a lower price than many. There are some areas where the start-up nature of the brand can be seen to have effects—such as the fitting and foam pad quality on the shorts; but overall, both the shorts and jersey from Souke are excellent value and offer an impressive performance level from this fledgling brand.
If you are looking for summer cycling kit that has a different heritage and style to the mainstream brands, then it is worth checking out Souke-Sports.com
