Review – Nite Ize Wraptor Rotating Smartphone Handlebar Mount
The design of the handlebar phone mount is simple: silicone straps wrap around the four corners of your smartphone; then the mount itself straps to a handlebar (or pushchair bar) using a universal wrist watch style adjustable strap. When strapped in place, the phone can be fully rotated to allow you to either use the unit in landscape or portrait mode, or to mount the holder to either a horizontal bar or one pointing directly ahead (such as a bike's stem).
Once in the holder and mounted to the bars, the phone feels secure. I have used this on off-road bike rides, and the phone remains safely in the mount. It is also impressive how well the stretchy silicone bands hold several assorted sizes of phone, both in and out of cases.
My only criticism of the design is that the wrist watch style strap needs to be very tight to grip a glossy painted handlebar, otherwise the mount tends to rotate around the bar. This can be overcome by mounting the unit on a grippy tape or bar-taped section of the handlebar; or by mounting the unit on the stem of the cockpit (if space allows), so that the forward and backwards motion of the bike as it goes over bumps does not cause the mount to rotate around the bar.
It is relatively early days to say how durable the silicone straps are, but I anticipate that they should last a few year of intensive use; which considering the price of the product makes the handlebar mount seem excellent value.
If you are someone that uses their phone for navigation, tracking, or you simply want to have it visible when you ride, then this Nite Ize Wraptor mount is a neat and well-made solution.
